About this Event
Spike Lee’s provocative and controversial satirical film “Bamboozled” was released in September 2000 and features Damon Wayans, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Savion Glover, Tommy Davidson, Michael Rappaport, and the late Paul Mooney, to name a few of the star-studded cast members. The community film screening series, Soul Cinema Sundays, will feature this new millennium commentary on the American tradition of blackface during its 25-year anniversary, on Sunday, February 16 at 4 pm (doors at 3:15) at the Plaza Theatre. All screenings include a discussion with artists and activists from community organizations working along the movie’s theme. As this film tackles the subject of how black images are depicted on screen, Deidre McDonald, Founding Artistic Director for the BronzeLens Film Festival will be in conversation with Kalonji Changa of Black Power Media, the event’s primary media sponsor.
Plot of the film: Pierre Delacroix is a Harvard-educated African-American man in the employment of television network CNS. In an effort to escape his contract through being fired, Delacroix develops a minstrel show, Mantan: The New Millennium Minstrel Show featuring black actors in blackface.
