Admission is free. A majority of seats will be released via Eventbrite on Monday, March 31st at 12:00 PM. Remaining tickets will be available at the door of the theater starting 30 minutes before each performance. When all available tickets have been assigned, a waiting list will be formed in order of patrons who are present at the door. Unclaimed tickets will be released to the waiting list 10 minutes before showtime.

About

Melancholy Play is an absurdist farce written by Sarah Ruhl ’97, ’01 MFA that follows Tilly, a sincerely melancholic bank teller who everyone can’t help but fall in love with. All Tilly wants to do is gaze out the window or exchange sad memories from childhood, and her tailor, hairdresser, and psychologist can’t help but find this incredibly sexy. Sometimes, there is singing. Sometimes, there is a mysterious man playing the cello. Sometimes, a character turns into an almond. While the play has a dreamlike quality, it asks us to understand our very real attraction to melancholy and explores the ways in which we relate to each other’s emotional states. Eventually, Tilly must face the consequences of embracing a new, horrifying feeling: Happiness.
