Examine the art and activism of Elizabeth Catlett with Dr. Dalila Scruggs, renowned for her scholarly research on the African American artist. Dr. Scruggs is the Curator of Photographs and Prints at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. In this featured lecture for "Storied Strings: The Guitar in American Art," Dr. Scruggs will address the ways Catlett’s formative years spent in New York City influenced the artist's important print "I Have Given the World My Songs," part of the artist’s "Negro Woman" series.
Catlett lived in Manhattan from 1942 through 1946. During these years, she sketched and painted guitars and guitar players as she wrestled with how her leftist politics and aesthetic experimentation would coexist in her work. Although the "Negro Woman" series was made after Catlett departed New York for Mexico City, New York’s social, political, and artistic milieu would inform the artist's work for years to come.
