SOROR: an ode to Black sisterhood || Audre Lorde & Toni Morrison's Birthday

LOVING ROOM: diaspora books + salon invites you to join us for SOROR: an ode to Black sisterhood, a #BlackLit soiree in honor of our yeyes Toni Morrison and Audre Lorde on their born day, Saturday, February 18.

This is the first edition of SOROR, an annual Black History Month gathering to celebrate the many ways that our Black women writer ancestors (and contemporaries) have embodied the joy and power of Black sisterhood, and given us the blueprint for staying lit, lifted and living-- thriving in our joy and purpose together, amplifying each other's light and shine.

Do you know that "The Sisterhood" was actually a thing? Co-founded in 1977 by Alice Walker and June Jordan, this Black women writers' circle included Toni Morrison herself, Ntozake Shange, Jessica Harris, Audre Lorde, and more, and existed to promote and sustain Black women's literary endeavors. We are channeling all the energy of their solidarity, sincerity, and sisterhood for this soiree.

The vibe for this affair is vintage-- think 70s-80s flair. Whatever you wear, dress like you mean it.

SOROR is a queer and trans affirming space for Black folks that centers all of us who identify with experiences of Black sisterhood.

SOROR features a DJ set by JusMoni & Stas Thee Boss of Sway & Swoon DJ collective, libations (non-alcoholic options available), light eats, and an open mic. You can register for the open mic here with the option to share an original piece of your choosing (poetry, song, monologue or other performance), or sign up to read a passage from a work by a Black woman writer on the theme / topic of sisters and sisterhood.
