About this Event
SOPHIA: THE FEMININE VOICE OF GOD
This two-part lecture & class series explores the evolution of Sophia, from her roots in Ancient Greek philosophy to her role in Gnosticism, alchemy, and modern spirituality. These lectures examine Sophia as the embodiment of wisdom, the World Soul, and the Holy Spirit, tracing her guises through history as a Saviour Goddess, Apocalyptic Virgin, and Mother of God. In addition to a lecture on the philosophical, visual and literary contexts of Sophia, the first lecture in the series features a close reading of the Pistis Sophia, a Gnostic text describing the rise and fall of the World Soul. The second lecture in the series features a meditation on alchemical representations of Sophia and includes a meditation where we can reflect on how she appears to each of us uniquely.
Part 1, a history of Sophia in the ancient world, close reading of the Gnostic Pistis Sophia
Part 2, a study of Sophia in the alchemical tradition and in visionary works of art and literature
