A musical ode to women who have shaped our world.
Sonya Lifschitz is a pianist known for her fiercely imaginative collaborations across dance, screen-based and performance art, and spoken word. Her artistry combines bold adventurousness with honed musicianship to create work that positions music at the cutting edge of contemporary performance practices, exploring boundaries of musical expression and interdisciplinary artistic practice.
Following on from the success of their acclaimed work Stalin’s Piano, Sonya Lifschitz and Robert Davidson deliver Creative Women, an audio-visual epic that tells stories of female artists, scientists and politicians through the words of the subjects made musical.
This new work, which sees its world premiere in the wondrous acoustics of the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, takes us into the very heart of creativity, with contributions from figures as diverse as Marie Curie, Dame Nellie Melba, Greta Thunberg, Rachel Carson, Malala Yousafzai, Fanny Mendelssohn, and Ada Lovelace.
Framing language as ritualised music and weaving together virtuoso piano, recorded voices of female creative and political figures, archival footage, and Sonya’s speaking voice, Davidson’s composition is an exploration of the ever-simmering tension between courage and doubt, triumph and failure, tenderness and fierceness. It is a musical ode to women who have shaped our world.
