Sons que Curam: Indigenous Film & Conversation on Land, Legacy, and Climate
Date: Friday, April 11, 2025
Location: Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium, Brooklyn Museum
Presented by , a nonprofit and educational platform amplifying Indigenous voices across Latin America, this special Earth Month event features Sons que Curam (Sounds That Heal)—a visually stunning short film directed by Indigenous activist Shirley Krenak. Through poetic visuals and ancestral sound, the film follows Shirley’s journey along Brazil’s Doce River after its destruction by a mining disaster.
Following the screening, Shirley and her son, Rhyún Krenak, will join Jungle Journal founder Sara Lopez for an intergenerational conversation on land rights, cultural legacy, and Indigenous climate leadership.
This is a rare opportunity to witness Indigenous storytelling at its most urgent and artful. Space is limited—secure your spot now.

What happened to the Doce River?
In 2015, a mining dam burst in Mariana, Minas Gerais, causing one of Brazil’s worst environmental disasters. Millions of tons of toxic sludge flooded the Doce River, destroying communities and ecosystems. The Krenak people, who hold a sacred connection to the river, were deeply affected as their ancestral lifeline became a toxic wasteland.

An Ode to Land, Ancestry, and Healing
Rooted in the wisdom of her Krenak ancestors, Shirley calls upon the power of sound and spirit to restore balance between humanity and the EARTH. Through chants, ritual, and storytelling, the film honors Indigenous stewardship while revealing how the land carries both wounds and wisdom.

Join us for this special film screening & conversation feat. Shirley Krenak, her son Ryhún Krenak, and our founder, Sara Lopez highlighting the future of conservation.
