About this Event
Sonic Chambers Quartet is a highly collaborative, adventurous jazz project based between New Orleans and New York City that blurs the lines between spontaneity and composition. The group is co-led by New Orleans clarinetist and saxophonist Byron Asher and NYC saxophonist and clarinetist Tomas Majcherski and features North Carolina bassist Matt Booth and New Orleans drummer Doug Garrison.
Their performances are dynamic musical journeys that traverse extreme ranges of harmonies and densities in pursuit of collective catharsis. Their debut recording, Kiss of the Earth, was released on Brooklyn-based label 577 Records, and Bandcamp Daily praised it as "wonderful, wildly melodic and a rhythmic dynamo" on their Best of Jazz list for April 2025. Since the album’s release, the group has toured across the U.S. playing traditional and alternative jazz venues alike. Their second recording, Spontaneous Situations, will be released in the spring of 2026.
At their performance at Studio St. Philip, the group will present, for the first time in its entirety, Tetrachtys, a new suite of original compositions that investigates universal themes of human spirituality and collectivity through the teachings of an Ancient Greek numerological religious sect founded by mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras. Through worshipping the numbers 1 through 10, ancient Pythagoreans hoped to bring themselves closer to a oneness with the universe not dissimilar to the tenets of modern Buddhism and Eastern philosophy. Sonic Chambers' ten-part suite presents a deep dive into the spiritual significance of each number, connecting these ancient teachings to today.
