Yes, you read that right; the 50th Songwriters@Scup.
In early 2022, as the pandemic was finally starting to let up, I approached Steve Mitchell at Scuppernong Books about holding a monthly “songwriters in the round” event. The few series of that kind that had been going before the pandemic would not be returning. As Steve and I pondered, a friend of mine went ahead and started one up. So I went to Steve and said “Someone has to do this, but it doesn’t have to be me.” That series only lasted about four months, so I came back and said “Well, I guess it has to be me after all.”
So on July 10, 2022, Emily Stewart, Michael C. Parris, and I performed at the first Songwriters@Scup. Now here we are, presenting our 50th show!
I’ve limited myself to only performing at the series once a year, but I really wanted to do this one. I’m thrilled to be performing with my friends Billie Feather and Jeff Wall.
Billie Feather is a multi-instrumentalist, educator, songwriter, composer, and performer. She currently teaches commercial guitar in the PopTech program at UNCG and performs with several bands, most notoriously Professor Twang & The Honky-Tonk Revue. This is her first time with us, but I’m sure it won’t be the last.
Jeff Wall, also known as BigDumbHick, just put out a fantastic new album, BIGDUMBHICK - Hard To Love Sober, produced by fellow S@S alumnus Doug Davis. The album features contributions from Riley Baugus, John Cowan, Patterson Hood, Michael Cleveland, and many others. This will be Jeff’s third time at S@S, and I have little doubt that he will be pulling out all the stops.
Y’all know me. I teach guitar and ukulele, and when not doing that, I do my best to clear out time to do what I love, writing and recording songs. I’ll sing a few for you.
Anyway, thanks to everyone at Scuppernong Books for letting us add a little mayhem to their second Sundays, all the performers who have graced our stage (I think Billie makes 94), and of course, all of you who have supported the art of songwriting as we’ve tried to present it for over four years now.
Please come join us. There’s a rumor that there will be cake.
