It's Mothers Day, and we have a special lineup of three fantastic women performers for your listening pleasure.
Returning to the S@S stage after performing at our very first event almost two years ago, Emily Stewart’s roots as a writer reach back to her hometown, Alabama’s literary capital, where she was raised by writers in the belly of her family’s newspaper and commissioned as a columnist before even growing tall enough to reach the employee time clock. With lyrics and melodies that channel the strength of Odetta, the delicate twang of Kitty Wells, and the forthright softness of Loretta Lynn, Emily finds a song in every story.
Now based in Greensboro, North Carolina, she is completing a full length album to be released in 2024. “Moth to the Moon” is an honest series of songs that illuminate and celebrate the emotions of beautifully imperfect people and the ways that we are each flying away from the shadows, alone but together, looking for a little more light.
Murphy Campbell is a Guilford County native and current Weaver Academy student studying music production. Murphy is a contemporary folk artist with a focus on the banjo and guitar ballads centering traditional Appalachian songwriting. She played Merlefest 2023 and will be attending the Swannanoa Gathering 2024.
Susan Johnson, at her core, is an interpreter of songs. Her varied repertoire ranges from folk ballads to disco, from the blues to Broadway. This year has been a turning point for Susan as she steps onto the stage with her own songs. These songs are as moving and engaging as her voice, evoking home and heartache, love and the possibility of transformation. If you love the voice of Joan Baez and the stories of Lucinda Williams, Susan might make you smile.
