About this Event
We sing but never wonder why. If we stop to think we might discover how anything from pop songs to Victorian hymns affect the way we think about ourselves and the world around us. But singing has also a number of other purposes, some of which are a double-edged sword. This session will have plenty of musical examples, familiar and less so.
John Bell of the Iona Community has, for long, been convinced that the aspect of church devotions - singing - given minimal attention is in fact the most important. The song of the people is not only summoned from the eternal heart of God, it is also the activity in which all can actively participate. But with that comes a danger: What if the songs we sing have little reference to the scriptures & tradition from which they come and hence lack authenticity? In the day's workshops, participants will explore how and why we sing, and how we can sing better.
John Bell has a gift for encouraging all to sing in a joyful, inclusive way. The material he brings is accessible and easy to learn. He works worldwide in areas of music, worship and spirituality. He is an ordained minister of the Church of Scotland, a hymnwriter, author and occasional broadcaster. John will also attend the Cowshed Service and communion at St Laurence Church on Sunday 5 March 9.30am – 10.30am
