SONG FOR SOPHIATOWN explores key moments of 1950s an ‘60s South Africa, viewed through the lens of popular culture.A collection of interwoven characters who expressed themselves (in the face of a heavy state) through music, journalism, theatre and the church (Miriam Makeba; Hugh Masekela; Trevor Huddleston; Arthur Goldreich; Henry Nxumalo; and Desmond Tutu).
Indeed, with political parties suppressed, much of the struggle was funnelled towards a fight for hearts-and-minds, where popular culture emerged as a very powerful weapon.
SONG FOR SOPHIATOWN is an ode to the contributions of these men and women. A story of rhythm, trauma, and humour, exploring a fascinating era which defined much of our national story.
Please join us at Seabrooke’s for another evening of story, wine and South Africans.
