About this Event
The Toronto Reference Library Arts Department presents an intimate talk between G.B. Jones and Peter Knegt (host and curator of CBC Arts Here and Queer and the Toronto film screening series Queer Cinema Club) as they discuss how witches have been perceived, presented, and portrayed in popular media.
Something Wicked will be moderated by Caroline Azar (singer/songwriter for Fifth Column, and playwright of 'DINK' and Manorexic) and Derek McCormack (author of The Haunted Hillbilly and The Well-Dressed Wound).
Lavishly illustrated and bolstered by intriguing essays on witchcraft shot through a queer lens, Witches is a modern-day grimoire. It's a little bit punk, a little bit horror film fandom, and a stirring appeal to resistance. Witches is a beacon, a call, a spell, and we've all been summoned.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase. Witches is published by Heretic House in partnership with Midnight Mass Press.
G.B. Jones is a Canadian artist, filmmaker, musician, and publisher of zines, known for her contributions to the queer punk and post-punk scenes. Jones initially gained recognition for her Tom Girls drawings published in the seminal queer-core zine J.D.s. From the early 1980s to the late 1990s, Jones performed with the proto-riot grrl band Fifth Column and was one of the co-founders of the group. Jones has also directed several films, including The Troublemakers, The Yo-Yo Gang, and The Lollipop Generation
