Soma: of the body
Soma comes from a word meaning; in Greek, so somatic
means and is most often used in connection with
ones health. Somatic movement is a practice of movement that
prioritizes internal, physical sensations and awareness over
external form or performance goals.
It involves focusing on what you feel in your body while moving slowly and with conscious attention, allowing for a deep connection between the body and mind. This internal focus helps to release ingrained tension, improve coordination, reduce pain, and foster greater overall well-being by building self-sensing (interoception).
What you can expect in your somatic movement class:
Internal Focus:
The primary goal is to pay attention to the
body as it is experienced from within.
Conscious Awareness:
You are aware of your movements and sensations as they
occur.
Slowness:
Movement is typically slow to allow the nervous system
time to process and learn new ways of moving.
No Specific Goal:
Unlike traditional fitness, the aim isn't to achieve a certain
pose or strength but to deepen your internal connection.
Mind-Body Connection:
It explores how emotions, stress, and past experiences
manifest as physical sensations and how to release them.
Benefits
Reduces Tension and Stress:.
It helps to unwind old, unhealthy patterns of muscle
engagement that can lead to pain and stiffness.
Improves Balance and Coordination:.
By increasing internal awareness, you can find more
efficient and effective ways to move.
Enhances Emotional Well-being:.
Connecting with the body's internal state can provide tools
to cope with anxiety, trauma, and other emotional
challenges.
Fosters Self-Perception:.
It builds interoception, or the ability to sense your body,
which supports better choices about your well-being.
