It’s grand final night and Liv King, an Indigenous AFLW player, finds herself sharing a taxi ride home with Coach. On a high, after winning the premiership and being awarded the prestigious Norm Smith medal, Liv dives into a taxi after one very large night of celebrations. However the trip takes a sudden turn when Coach makes a racial joke at the driver’s expense and the driver pulls over demanding that Coach get out of the car and leaving Liv with a choice. To protect her career and defend Coach? Or to side with a man she has only just met…
Inspired by Adam Goodes’ documentary The Australian Dream, Underdog aims to interrogate attitudes towards casual racism in Australia and its effect. When someone makes a joke in good faith and a person takes offence, how do we respond? Is it possible to be racist without realising and how do we navigate an awkward conversation from a position of privilege?
Underdog seeks to start a conversation about the lack of incentive for those in subordinate positions to report racial vilification and looks towards a future that sees the underdog triumph.
