Second of 4-Part IN-PERSON Improv SeriesEach workshop in this hands-on 4-part improvisation series focuses on a common jazz tune or chord progression.
Each instructor will present their approach to learning and soloing over the selected tunes or progressions.
Bring your instrument and sign up for one or all three!
For this section, Ian will share a range of ideas for soloing on John Coltrane’s Giant Steps, and related tunes.
About Ian Carey
San Francisco Bay Area-based trumpeter, composer, arranger, and educator Ian Carey is involved in a broad spectrum of musical projects, including his Ian Carey Quintet+1, whose 2020 release, “Fire in My Head,” was commissioned by Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works program, and Wood/Metal/Plastic, a 7-piece ensemble, seamlessly blending chamber ensemble dynamics with sections of close voicings and free improvisation, as noted by Berkeleyside.
