About Kasey Knudsen
Kasey Knudsen, a San Francisco-based saxophonist, composer, and educator, is a prominent figure in the Bay Area jazz scene. With a Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Composition from Berklee College of Music, she’s lauded as “one of the region’s most esteemed saxophonists” (Andrew Gilbert, San Francisco Classical Voice, 2018) and a vital voice in local jazz (Andrew Gilbert, East Bay Express, 2014). Recognized by Paste Magazine as one of “10 Female Instrumentalists Who Redefine Jazz” (2016) and voted “One of the Best Female Jazz Musicians in the East Bay” (CBS, SF local Bay Area, 2013), Knudsen’s impact transcends performance. She’s received commissions including one from San Jose Jazz ‘New Works Festival’ in 2021, and in 2020, she earned InterMusic SF’s Small Chamber Music Grant, supporting her debut album with the Kasey Knudsen Sextet. Her compositions have graced venues like Intersection For the Arts and the De Young Museum, drawing inspiration from visual artist Deborah Oropallo. Collaborating with diverse musical voices both locally and internationally, Knudsen has shared stages with Tune-Yards, Fred Frith, Charlie Hunter Quartet, and more. As an educator, she specializes in improvisation, nurturing creativity in her students.
