David Gista was born in Paris, and now divides his time between France and the United States, having established his artistic career on both continents.
Gista studied at the “Ecole nationale superieure des beaux-arts” in Paris and so combines his classical fine arts training with his keen-eyed examination of modernity, creating a running commentary on contemporary life expressed in a variety of media.
Gista has exhibited his work extensively between France and the United States and also throughout Europe. He is currently represented by the Thomas Masters Gallery and Springboardarts Gallery in Chicago and has a studio in east Garfield Park.
His work is very often about books and libraries, though the body of work presented in this exhibition, LAND, revolves around the relationship between the human and the land. It raises question about our complex and intricate relationship with nature and our nature. Are will still part of nature or have we lost touch with it?
Gista’s paintings in this show are trying to address the subject without, of course, giving us an answer...but rather by being whimsical and playful.
His answer in front of the very serious environmental issues is to emphasize the unbearable lightness of being and his love of this planet.
