Solo Bach in Winter: The Violoncello da Spalla

Experience a stunning afternoon of music at Old First Reformed Church. The violoncello da spalla is a rare and historically significant string instrument that is distinct in its design and playing technique. The name “da spalla” roughly translates to "of the shoulder," as it is traditionally played resting on the player's shoulder.

Andrew Gonzalez will perform selections from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello on the violoncello da spalla, which is thought to be the instrument Bach intended for the sixth suite of these masterworks. This is an opportunity to hear (and see!) this agile and resonant instrument.
