Solidarity With Ukraine's Trade Union Movement

As Ukraine faces its fourth winter of war and Russian missiles rain down on its communities, its people face continued uncertainty, privation and threat to life. Whilst we hear much about the country's very real need for military and other supports to defend itself from the fascist and expansionist designs of its larger neighbour, we hear little of its trade unions and their role in the democratic processes under threat from Russia. With their activities curtailed by wartime legislation and many of their members serving in the armed forces, they nonetheless continue to organise and inflluence employers and government. Efforts have been made by trade unions in Scotland to forge links and provide support to their sister organisations in Ukraine. The aim of this event is to bring this aspect of solidarity to the attention of parliamentarians and others. Ukraine has two trade union federations (the equivalent of the STUC and TUC here) - the KPVU and the FPU, both of which organise workers across the whole economy of Ukraine, including within the armed forces.
