THE MURDOCK-WHITNEY HOUSE
The Murdock-Whitney House, a Colonial Revival and Victorian gem dating back to 1850, holds the secrets of five generations who once called it home. Constructed by Elisha Murdock, the visionary founder of E. Murdock Co., this stately abode witnessed the joys and sorrows of the Murdock family. Here, Elisha and his wife, Rohanna, raised their three children: Ellen, Sophia, and young George, who tragically passed away at the tender age of seven. As the 20th century dawned, the house underwent a dramatic transformation under the watchful eye of Sophia, widow of William Webster Whitney. Across the shadowy street stands The Isaac Morse House, a hauntingly beautiful Georgian Colonial masterpiece built around 1790 by the skilled hands of architect and builder Robert Ruggles. With its ten rooms and five fireplaces, this historic dwelling exudes an aura of mystery and intrigue. Step inside, and you'll be transported to a bygone era, where Isaac Morse himself, born on November 19, 1775, presides over his domain. A gravestone in the nearby Old Centre Cemetery serves as a testament to his legacy, which lives on in the whispers of the wind and the creaking of floorboards. Today, The Isaac Morse House stands as the revered Winchendon History and Cultural Center Toy Museum, a beacon of history and heritage in Winchendon Village.
