Join the Historic Mother African Union Church, the August Quarterly Festival, Wilmington Public Library and the Delaware Historical Society’s Jane & Littleton Mitchell Center for African American Heritage for an evening with author, political commentator, public intellectual and educator Dr. Eddie S. Glaude, Jr.
Glaude's talk will challenge attendees to think critically about the present and future of American democracy, and invite them to step out of the shadows of past giants in order to build a better society―one that derives its strength from the pew, not the pulpit.
Followed by a moderated audience Q & A with Rev. Dr. Ronald W. Whitaker, II of the Mother African Union Church, Dr. Glaude’s talk will intersect claims from both his seminal 2010 opinion-editorial article titled The Black Church is Dead and his latest book titled We Are the Leaders We Have Been Looking For!
One of the nation’s most prominent scholars, Dr. Eddie Glaude, Jr.’s writings—including Democracy in Black: How Race Still Enslaves the American Soul, In a Shade of Blue: Pragmatism and the Politics of Black America and the New York Times bestseller Begin Again: James Baldwin’s America and Its Urgent Lessons for our Own—take a wide look at Black communities, the difficulties of race in the United States and the challenges we face as a democracy.
Created in partnership with the Mother African Union Church and Wilmington Public Library, this event is part of the weeklong 2024 August Quarterly Festival (August 18 – 25, 2024).
