2023, Neo-Nottingham is about to E.X.P.L.O.D.E. !!!Porlock Press is thrilled to present a special 35th anniversary screening of Katsuhiro Otomo's cyberpunk masterpiece Akira.
In 1988 the sudden destruction of Tokyo set off a chain of events that led to World War 3. Now, 31 years later, the streets of Neo-Tokyo are overrun by gang warfare and riots caused by anti-government protests.
After a high-speed collision with a mysterious child, teenage biker Tetsuo begins to develop powerful psychic abilities similar to those held by Akira, the entity responsible for the original calamity that destroyed the city.
Pursued by both military forces and his childhood friend Kaneda while struggling to control his growing powers, Tetsuo sets out to locate Akira in the hope of understanding his true nature. He wreaks havoc across the city as it seems that history is doomed to repeat itself.
Akira is adapted from the manga of the same name and beautifully animated by Tokyo Movie Shinsha studios. The film also features an incredible gamelan-infused soundtrack composed by Shōji Yamashiro and performed by music collective Geinoh Yamashirogumi.
Full of iconic images that have been endlessly referenced throughout pop culture, Akira remains a timeless classic and a pinnacle of animated filmmaking.
Screening in Japanese with English subtitles.
