The San Juan College Planetarium’s AstroFriday presentation for Friday, May 3, is Solar Quest. Show times are at 7:30 and 8:30 p.m.This 12-minute fulldome video provides an overview of the Sun-Earth environment. Detailed high-quality animations and videos demonstrate various solar phenomena such as fusion, light energy and solar surface features. Also discussed are the impacts that space weather may have on Earth and how the Earth’s atmosphere and magnetic field protects all life on Earth. The show also highlights the role of the Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO) and how scientists have begun to use it as a way to help identify and predict severe space weather.
Following each presentation there will be a short sky show, using the Planetarium’s star projector to depict the night sky of early May. Spring sky maps will be available for free while supplies last. There is no admission charge, but seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. In order to preserve dark adaption, there is no late admittance into the planetarium once the show has started.
Weather permitting, a free public stargaze with telescopes takes place at 9:30 p.m. in the courtyard between the Planetarium and the Connie Gotsch Theatre after the last show. The Stargaze will last a maximum of one hour. There is no capacity limit for the Stargaze.
View the “double-double” stars Alcor and Mizar and our binary North Star, Polaris. If weather conditions are particularly favorable, participants may see deep-sky objects such as the Beehive Cluster in Cancer, the Coma Berenices Star Cluster, the globular cluster M13 in Hercules, the Sombrero Galaxy in Virgo and the galactic pair, M81 and M82 in Ursa Major.
