Join us for a free viewing party of the upcoming solar eclipse!
This September, a rare partial solar eclipse will be visible across Aotearoa New Zealand! This will only visible here and a few Pacific Island nations (and perhaps some penguins in Antarctica).
On the morning of Monday 22nd September 2025, the Sun will rise while the eclipse is already in progress. The Moon will slowly move across the disc of the Sun and partially block out its light.
We haven't seen an eclipse of this magnitude here since 2012, so you won't want to miss it! Here’s what to expect and how you can watch this cosmic dance between the Sun and the Moon.
If you’d like to join us to watch this cosmic event, we’ll be hosting a free viewing party atop the summit of Maungakiekie One Tree Hill in the morning (weather dependent)! Check the forecast, set your alarms, and bring your whānau for this special cosmic show. We’ll have experts from Te Whatu Stardome, solar telescopes, and members of the Auckland Astronomical Society on hand.
There is no direct car access to the summit of Maungakiekie One Tree Hill, so please allow enough time to walk up and arrive by 6am. The Sun rises at 6:10am in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, and the eclipse will finish by 8am.
Important!
Unlike a lunar eclipse, solar eclipses do require eye protection, as it is never safe to look directly at the Sun. Because this is a partial solar eclipse, the Sun will not be fully blocked by the Moon at any point during the event. You’ll need a pair of solar glasses (not sunglasses) to watch safely — you can purchase these online, or grab a pair from our gift shop here at Te Whatu Stardome for $5. If you’re joining us at Maungakiekie One Tree Hill, we’ll have pairs available to borrow on the morning.
