About this Event
The Solanus Casey Center’s recently completed building addition will give attendees an opportunity to learn about the unique design collaboration that resulted in a space that welcomes visitors from near and far. The space reflects the mission, vision and values of the Capuchin Franciscan friars and reflects the spirituality of Blessed Solanus Casey, a Capuchin friar who spent his life in the service of people. As porter at the Detroit monastery door, he met thousands of people from every age and walk of life, earning recognition as "The Doorkeeper." The new welcoming space was designed to provide visitors the opportunity to purchase items related to the life and spirituality of Blessed Solanus Casey, a candidate for sainthood in the Roman Catholic Church. The space is also home to On the Rise Café, a social enterprise program of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen that provides workforce and life skills training for men returning from incarceration or a substance use disorder treatment program.
Saint Bonaventure Monastery and Chapel has been serving the community since 1883. The adjacent Solanus Casey Center and associated collection of buildings, grounds, soup kitchens, and urban farms serve as an anchor for the lower Eastside - providing a welcoming home for parishioners, neighbors, those in need, and visitors from all over the world. It is truly a place of connection.
A tour of the recently completed addition to the Solanus Casey Center will give visitors an opportunity to learn more about how this important Detroit center has united the community and also learn how the additional space supports that mission with a gift shop and café.
This event is an official part of the Detroit Month of Design. 2022 marks the 12th anniversary of the festival which takes place September 1-30. Programmed by Design Core, Detroit Month of Design is a citywide celebration of creativity that gathers designers and the greater community to celebrate Detroit’s role as a UNESCO City of Design.
