SOLA festival 2026
The annual festival for experimental music and moving image returns to the speakers and cinema screen of WHS Teatteri Union for the 11th time! The festival is held on Friday 30th October and Saturday 31st October 2026.
The festival begins with moving image works of Danaya Chulphuthiphong, who is a filmmaker and artist based in Bangkok. Working across still and moving images, her practice navigates the intersection of social observation and experimental form, with a particular focus on the materiality of the 16mm medium.
Friday evening’s music program starts with Aalto & Yli-Tepsa; the duo explores and creates acoustic string music – sonic landscapes, atmospheres, sketches and sound vignettes. The string performance is followed by the mysterious synthesizer music of Esa Kaari.
Mid-Friday night we have a special live-cinema performance: Radiaali Näkemys (A Radial View) – film, spoken word, and radio noise performed by Mika Taanila, Helmi Kajaste and Käärmeniemi. A crumbling performance about a residential tower and the glow of suburban planning. The spoken word part is in Finnish.
After that comes a solo vocal concert by Annika Fuhrmann, whose practice is known for its expressive vocal and bodily approach. Friday evening concludes with the abstract dance music of Dental Boid.
Saturday evening starts with two short films by Müge Yildiz, whose practice explores experimental moving image through analogue film, installation, biological materials, and non-human processes.
The evening continues with Pauliina Syrjälä's improvisation on kantele. Syrjälä plays all types of kantele, from the five-string kantele to the 41-string instrument. After the kantele performance comes intricate electroacoustic music – a rare concert by the composer Patrick Kosk, who has been active in the field since the early 80s.
The festival concludes with a screening of "Thirty Years of Motion Pictures (March of the Movies)" from 1927, with a live electronic score by Nika Son (DE). The screening is a collaboration between Metakino and SOLA festival, and it is supported by Goethe-Institut.
SOLA festival is supported by the City of Helsinki – Culture and Leisure Division. It is organised by the non-profit Välirivi ry in collaboration with WHS Teatteri Union.
