Tenor sax:
Gavin Calkins - grew up in the Northgate neighborhood of Seattle, initially studying the tenor saxophone with Mike Edwards and then Denny Goodhew. In his youth, Gavin participated in summer Seattle Youth Jazz ensembles and received a scholarship to attend the Teagarden Jazz Camp (formally called 'Sacramento Traditional Jazz Camp') at the Sly Park Education Center, in the El Dorado National Forest, CA. Initially attending Ingraham High-School, Gavin transferred to Roosevelt HS for his senior year to participate in the jazz program under the leadership of Scott Brown. As a member of the Roosevelt Jazz Band, Gavin performed at the International Association of Jazz Educators Conference, the Essentially Ellington Festival, and many festivals in Europe
After high-school, Gavin took a roughly fifteen-year break from playing music until he rekindled his love for the saxophone during the COVID-19 lockdown. Since returning to the instrument, he has participated in various ensembles at both Jazz Night School and Seattle Jazz Academy and studied privately with Neil Welch and the great Gary Hammon.
Jeremy Shaskus – a versatile and seasoned woodwind performer and composer/arranger living in the Seattle area. Jeremy is an alumnus of the illustrious Roosevelt Jazz Band and William Paterson University's jazz program. Jeremy moved back to Seattle in 2014 after graduating college and working as a professional musician in the Tri-State area. Failing to find an alternate path to music and art, Jeremy soon began to apply his highly analytical, yet counter intuitive and seemingly paradoxical shotgun approach to his musical career.
Some personal highlights include touring and recording with Cadence Jazz Magazine publisher David Haney, performing with Bernard Purdie and Julian Priester, presenting original music 3 years in a row for Earshot’s Jazz in the 2nd Century festival, performing over 10 years continuously with local Seattle legend Marc Smason, and an 8 year-tenure as horn arranger and sax player with Breaks & Swells. During the pandemic he collaborated with local sax stars Darian Asplund and Alex Dugdale as producer for the short-lived podcast “That Seattle Swing”. As the world began to reopen, he found himself gravitating towards production/broadcast and teaching, only to return to his roots as a jazz musician.
Piano:
Trevor Cohen – Trevor Cohen – by day a Professor of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Washington in Seattle - grew up in a musical family in Cape Town, South Africa. There, he studied with local jazz piano luminaries Henry February and Merton Barrows and performed on the local scene while attending medical school. After a move to New York City to further his studies he maintained his devotion to music and has studied independently over the years with Samir Chatterjee and Efrain Toro (tabla and percussion) and Tim Lyddon (piano), and attended workshops with Barry Harris and Howard Reese. Currently he is enjoying a return to collective improvisation within Seattle’s robust jazz community.
Bass:
Court Crawford - bassist, composer, arranger, producer, audio engineer, and teacher currently living near Seattle, Washington in the United States. Court has been performing in the United States, Mexico, Peru, Cuba, and Puerto Rico since 1979. Court grew up on the upper West side of Manhattan. The sounds of every culture and jazz permeated his youth. With a strong foundation from City University of New York, Court has consistently sought out the magic potential of many styles of music, and particularly the function of the bass in those styles. Some highlights of Courts extensive career include recording and performing with Sonny Simmons and Barbara Donald as well as co-founding the Olympia Chamber Orchestra. Currently Court performs regularly in the local latin and salsa scene with Yambambo and Monamor.
Drums:
Sandy Greenbaum - an accomplished musician with an extensive background spanning multiple genres. Sandy grew up in Southern California and started drumming at age 12. At age 21, he was touring and playing five nights a week in venues up and down the West Coast from San Diego to Alaska, primarily as a leader of a 1980s new wave band. In the 1990’s Sandy relocated to the Pacific Northwest, adding Canada to his list of gig destinations. Over the years Sandy has collaborated with renowned producers and artists, consistently delivering standout contributions through his exceptional technical skills and hard-earned musical expertise. His refined talents and long record of success have cemented his reputation as a consummate professional in the industry.
