About this Event

The Introduction to Social Role Valorization (SRV) workshop is a full, four-day intensive workshop. We will examine the common life experiences of people with disabilities, as well as others who are seen as socially devalued in our society. SRV Theory provides a way to understand and address social devaluation. Through its ten themes, SRV Theory offers a coherent way to counteract these negative life experiences by helping individuals get, and keep, valid and valued social roles. This workshop will be relevant for those who provide support (both family members and practitioners).

Meet The Facilitators!

Karin Bonesteel Karin Bonesteel currently works as the Director of Community Living for The Nemasket Group, Inc., in Fairhaven, Massachusetts (US). Karin has a BA in Psychology and an MA in Social Work. Karin began her work in human services as a direct care worker in northern New York at an Intermediate Care Facility for 12 people. She moved on to work at Rensselaer County ARC in 1986; first as a direct support worker and then as a case manager. It was there that she first began to study the principles of normalization and attended a PASS workshop. She started teaching Wolfensberger’s work while in New York, and is currently recognized by the North American SRV Council as a Social Role Valorization teacher.

Karin moved to Massachusetts in 1992 where she went to work for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Mental Retardation as a Program Director, directly involved in the closing of the Dever Developmental Center and the building of the community system. Karin has studied Citizen Advocacy in depth and was involved with a group of citizens on Cape Cod trying to start a Citizen Advocacy Program. Karin coordinates and teaches workshops for families, direct support staff and other concerned parties on how to help vulnerable people to have socially valued roles.

Since beginning at The Nemasket Group in 2012, Karin has worked to help the people she oversees supports for to have valued social roles and to embed the practice, language, and principles of SRV within the day-to-day operational culture of the organization.

Zana Lutfiyya leads research initiatives within this theme that examine the influence of the social (de)valuation of vulnerable populations through the construction of perceptions and biases on end of life care. Zana Lutfiyya completed her graduate training and post-doctoral work at the Center on Human Policy, Syracuse University. She joined the University of Manitoba in 1992. Her longstanding research interest has been identifying and examining the factors that help or hinder the valued social participation of individuals with intellectual disabilities in community life. In recent years this has included facilitating the participation of individuals with intellectual disabilities in the research process, as participants and in helping determine research goals and questions.
