What is Social Role Valorisation (SRV)? Social Role Valorisation is a powerful framework for creating positive change in the lives of people with disability. It considers the roles in their own life that add meaning and validate an individual’s sense of worth.

A core principle of SRV is that people with valued societal roles have better access to the good things a society offers. In contrast, those with devalued societal roles, or with few or marginally valued roles, often struggle to access these benefits. Therefore, cultivating valued social roles and the positive status that comes with them is essential for individuals to attain the advantages available within their culture.

Social Role Valorisation is gaining traction in Western Australia, and support workers are being empowered with the tools to develop roles in the community that are valued and respected. This approach not only increases competency but also opens up a world of opportunities.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Workshops include increased awareness and understanding of:

• What is Social Role Valorisation (SRV) and why is itimportant?

• The core themes and principles involved in the theory of SRV.

• How the principles of SRV translate and apply to individuals’ lives and in their roles.

• How the Disability Standards for Service Providers are underpinned by the tenets of SRV.

• Understanding what quality service provision is and what we should expect.

• How SRV can be used to meet the real needs of marginalised individuals resulting in a better life.

• What is a socially valued role and how roles are identified, created, and developed?

• Examples of good and effective use of SRV to build lives of opportunity and inclusion.
