“Then love leapt at us from the shadows.”“Like a murderer in an alley”
Strangers, lovers, devils. 1930ʼs Moscow is full of strange folk. But who is the woman crying over her bouquet of yellow flowers? What the hell happened at the Arts Theatre last night? And... is that a human sized cat?
Based on the posthumously published novel 'The Master and Margarita' by Mikhail Bulgakov, Edward Kempʼs stage adaptation takes the audience on a swirling journey of captivating surrealism featuring romance, devil-pacts and of course, a play within a play.
Thought to be based on Bulgakovʼs own experience as an oppressed creative in the USSR and his legacy defining
relationship with his third wife Yelena (she safeguarded the novel until publication was considered permissible), The Master and Margarita is considered Bulgakovʼs most seminal work.
First published in 2004, Kempʼs English language adaptation does a wonderful job of deftly guiding the audience through the plot without sacrificing the comedy and poignancy of Bulgakovʼs original novel.
For those who loved getting to know Bulgakov as a character in
our recent production 'Collaborators', The Master and Margarita is a fantastic opportunity to get to know him as a writer. See the parallels of Bulgakovʼs own life within this wonderful piece of romantic-surrealism and find yourself questioning whether you too would flinch if confronted by the devil himself. ♟??
Note: 'The Master and Margarita' will be part of the Rondo Theatre Companyʼs 2025 production programme so this is a great chance to get to know the play before auditions open next year.
? We'll read the script through in full, taking turns with characters and discussing the play (and believe me, there's a lot to be said about this one!). There's no pressure to read if you don't want to but we'd love to see you there all the same.
⏰ 6pm for a 6:30 start (if you might be late, come anyway!)
? Bring your own snacks to share but we're lucky enough to be hosted at St James Wine Vaults for this event so please make use of the bar on the ground floor. Soft drinks are of course available.
