Soap carving workshop with Ngaroma Riley
Discover the art of reduction carving in this hands-on workshop with artist Ngaroma Riley.
Learn about the tikanga of carving and the ancestral form and function of the koruru mask before developing practical carving skills using soap and simple, safe tools. You'll explore techniques for creating three-dimensional forms while making your own unique soap carving to take home.
This workshop is perfect for beginners and can also be tailored for those with more carving experience. The workshop is Suitable for ages 12+ Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
Workshop dates:
Sunday 20 September | 10.00am–12.00pm and 2.00pm–4.00pm
Thursday 24 September | 6.00pm–8.00pm
Cost: $20 per person (All tools and materials are provided.)
Ngaroma Riley (Te Rarawa, Te Aupōuri, Pākehā)
Ngaroma Riley is an artist and a founder of Te Ana o Hine, a wahine-led carving shed based at Te Tuhi in Tāmaki Makaurau. Ngaroma began her carving journey making Buddhist statues while living and working in Japan. Since returning to Aotearoa in 2020 she has completed a Certificate in Whakairo at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. In 2022 she built a storehouse for a sculptural installation at Kaitaia and was shortlisted for the 2023 Kingi Tuheitia Portraiture Award. In 2025, Ngaroma won the Molly Morpeth Canaday Major Art Award. She is known for her karetao (hand-carved puppets) and love of chainsaws.
Te Ana o Hine
Te Ana o Hine at Te Tuhi is a wāhine-led carving space born to create a safe and supportive environment for wāhine taketake and others who encounter barriers in the carving world. Literally translated as "the cave of Hine", the studio space draws on the mana of all atua hine, offering an āhuru mōwai (sanctuary) for the artists who work within. Te Ana o Hine could also be read as the entrance to the whare tangata, or the house of humanity, recognising wāhine Māori for their ability to create life and nurture future generations.
