Canterbury Westland Section Talk: Thursday 5 November
Snowdrifting: Yvonne Pflüger & Tim Church
The Snowdrift mountain range is not a place that many people know about, but most people will have seen these mountains, either from the Routeburn road or from Cascade Saddle. The range is on the western side of the Dart River, forming the Main Divide with many glaciers and snowy peaks. This makes the area an ideal destination for a multi-day trans-alpine trip for those who want to climb enticing places like the Snowman and have a look at the Snow White Glacier.
Yvonne and Tim will talk about a couple of trips they have made into the Snowdrift range. One of these involved a crossing of the range and a packraft out down the Arawhata river, and the other a traverse of the range from South to North. If you love the idea of a (challenging) multi-day trans-alpine trip in the Aspiring area, the Snowdrift range should be on your radar.
About the speaker: Yvonne Pflüger moved to New Zealand from her native Austria to study, and then settled here in Christchurch for a number of years before moving to Queenstown with her partner Tim Church. In addition to tramping and climbing, Yvonne and Tim do a lot of ski-touring, kayaking and packrafting, so they have the mountains pretty well covered! Yvonne was on the NZAC Canterbury Westland committee at one point and has also been on the board of NZAC.
