Join us for a special presentation by Dr. Theodore S. Gonzalves, curator at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History, as he explores Asian Pacific American experiences that span centuries. On Monday, September 30, Dr. Gonzalves will highlight fascinating stories of AAPI innovation and invention through artifacts featured in his latest book, Smithsonian Asian Pacific American History, Art, and Culture in 101 Objects.
As one of the fastest-growing communities in the United States, the rich and diverse histories of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities have been deeply intertwined with the history of the Americas. Dr. Gonzalves will bring these stories to life, connecting past and present through the lens of AAPI contributions to American culture. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to engage with the history, art, and culture of AAPI communities and learn about the stories behind these extraordinary artifacts.
This event will include a presentation of approximately 45 minutes, with an opportunity for Q&A.

Dr. Theodore S. Gonzalves is a curator at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History. His areas of responsibility include the research, collection, and exhibition of the performing arts and Asian Pacific American histories. He previously served as director of the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center. A Fulbright Scholar with extensive teaching experience in the United States, Spain, and the Philippines, Dr. Gonzalves has also been awarded senior fellowships at the Smithsonian Institution, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the Library of Congress. He was elected the 21st president of the Association for Asian American Studies in 2018, appointed to the Organization of American Historians’ Distinguished Lectureship Program in 2023, and is currently a member of the board of directors of the American Council of Learned Societies.
