Smart Energy Tech: Narratives, Pros and Cons in British News Media

Come join us at The Priory Rooms Meeting and Conference Centre for a community workshop on how different British newspapers report on the pros and cons of new household energy technologies, such as such as smart meters, electric vehicles and heat pumps.

University of Birmingham academics Dr Timea Nochta and Dr Zoya Pourmirza will present the results of analysing several thousand articles from leading national newspapers (e.g., The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Times, Daily Mail). The results show how different newspapers create and cultivate distinct narratives around each technology (over-)emphasising certain advantages or disadvantages. These skewed accounts can, in turn, result in potential misconceptions among readers. The presentation will be followed by interactive discussions on participants' own experiences and reactions to the uncovered narrative stories.

Refreshments, nibbles and cake will be provided, and we are able to reimburse local travel costs (bus day ticket or equivalent train ticket) for registered participants. Registration is free and open to everyone. We require all participants to register via Eventbrite, as we only have a limited number of places available for the workshop. We would kindly ask that you only register if you are certain to attend. If circumstances change and you can no longer make it, please cancel your registration so that the place can be made available to someone else.

If you can't make this date but are interested in the workshop, we have another date available on Thu 18th May - to access the registration page pease click here.

The workshop is organised as part of the the CORNERSTONE (COuntering mis- and disinfoRmatioN in digitalised EneRgy Systems TOwards Net zEro) project, and funding is provided by the University of Birmingham.
