About the Exhibition
'Bridge Projects: Smaller Works' is a partnership between artists Stuart Allen and Cade Bradshaw. They have completed public art installations in playgrounds, schools, along trails, in corporate lobbies, government buildings, underneath bridges, on the beach, in parks, and once, in a dark, derelict shell of a former newspaper press room. Primarily known for their public artwork, this exhibition is a survey of the partners’ smaller scale works.
Allen and Bradshaw began working together in 2013 when Cade was still a student at Trinity University. In 2016, spoiled by years of Cade’s efficiency and skill in the studio, Stuart suggested a partnership before losing him to the larger job market. Despite the 20+ year age gap, their relationship quickly evolved from mentor-mentee to a truly collaborative dynamic. Their aesthetic interests are well aligned. Concepts often connect to landscape and atmospheric phenomena. The perception of vast spaces, elemental forces, and light are recurring themes in the work shown here.
This exhibition is a partnership with the San Antonio River Foundation (SARF). Stuart’s relationship with SARF dates back to 2008 when he was commissioned to complete two installations along the Riverwalk. In the 16 years since, he served on the board, chaired the art and architecture committee, and was instrumental in the development of Confluence Park. Stuart and Cade have also served SARF, the City of San Antonio and the San Antonio River Authority as consultants and advisors on many other public art projects.
Stuart and Cade’s connection to Lake | Flato began with Confluence Park, but has since expanded to include the 2017 Paper Cloud project and, most recently, three commissioned works for the Lake Flato-designed Ditch Water Discovery Center in Stephenville, TX.
For over 20 years, SARF has worked to enhance the San Antonio River Basin. Stuart and Cade are honored to be part of this transformative work, and to be associated with Lake Flato and the San Antonio River Foundation.
