Join New York-based jazz vocalist Aubrey Johnson and her working band, including Chris McCarthy on piano, Matt Aronoff on bass, and Jay Sawyer on drums, for an engaging workshop on arranging jazz standards for vocalists with rhythm section. Discover practical and accessible techniques for jazz arranging, covering topics such as basic intros/endings, rubato playing, groove, feel, meter alterations, choosing the right key, and lead sheet basics.
This interactive session welcomes singers, pianists, guitarists, bassists, and drummers alike. Participants are encouraged to bring a lead sheet (5 copies) for one standard of their choosing. Aubrey and her band will provide valuable feedback and guidance, helping attendees enhance their song interpretation skills and apply arranging concepts effectively. Aubrey Johnson is a New York-based vocalist, composer, and educator specializing in jazz, Brazilian, and contemporary music. She holds a Master’s degree in jazz performance from the New England Conservatory and a Bachelor’s from Western Michigan University. Johnson released her debut album, Unraveled, in 2020, and a duo album, Play Favorites, with pianist Randy Ingram in 2022. She teaches in the Jazz Department at Montclair State University and the Jazz Masters Program at Queens College, having previously held positions at the New England Conservatory and Berklee College of Music.
As an undergraduate, Johnson was part of Western Michigan University’s renowned vocal jazz ensemble, Gold Company, and won two DownBeat Collegiate Student Music Awards. Her notable collaborations include performing with Lyle Mays, recording with Bobby McFerrin, and contributing to Grammy-winning albums by Arturo O’Farrill and Lyle Mays. Johnson’s work has taken her across the US, Canada, China, Taiwan, Europe, and South America. She was recently awarded a composition residency at MacDowell Colony and a Chamber Music America Performance Plus Grant.
