Small Gods Book Club October Discussion - Sea of Tranquility

Welcome to the Club - the Book Club, that is! This monthly event will endeavor to bring you books you haven’t read before from the stories and voices of a diverse collection of authors.

We are so thrilled to be hosting our next book club at Small Gods Brewing Co. While some of our books will be selected from the novels our beers are named after, some of the others will just be novels we cannot wait to discuss with you!

On the event: We will be discussing Emily St. John Mandel’s Sea of Tranquility on Wednesday, October 25th from 6pm to 8pm. Please register through the Eventbrite and come prepared to discuss the book! Please arrive early if you are wanting to order food and drinks. Please try to sit in the back horseshoe area first. If that area fills up, we will expand into the rest of the brewery.

On the book: Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel follows the intertwined lives of people from across time and space. This novel tells a tender tale of humanity set amongst plague, music, travel, love and art.

Edwin St. Andrew is eighteen years old when he crosses the Atlantic by steamship, exiled from polite society following an ill-conceived diatribe at a dinner party. Two centuries later a famous writer named Olive Llewellyn is on a book tour. She’s traveling all over Earth, but her home is the second moon colony, a place of white stone, spired towers, and artificial beauty.

When Gaspery-Jacques Roberts, a detective in the black-skied Night City, is hired to investigate an anomaly in the North American wilderness, he uncovers a series of lives upended: The exiled son of an earl driven to madness, a writer trapped far from home as a pandemic ravages Earth, and a childhood friend from the Night City who, like Gaspery himself, has glimpsed the chance to do something extraordinary that will disrupt the timeline of the universe.

Sea of Tranquility is available through local book-sellers such as Tanner's Books, Bolen Books and Indigo. It is also available as an e-book through Kobo, Kindle and Google Books.

Emily St. John Mandel is the author of six novels, most recently Sea of Tranquility, which was selected by President Barack Obama as one of his favourite books of 2022. Her previous novels include The Glass Hotel and Station Eleven, which was a finalist for a National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award, won the 2015 Arthur C. Clarke Award among other honours, has been translated into 36 languages, and aired as a limited series on HBO Max. She lives in New York City and Los Angeles.
