Authors:
10:30-12:00 PM Tashia Hart: Bead Me a Portal to Midnight (Cozy Fantasy/Sci Fi)
In Bead Me a Portal to Midnight, water isn’t just something you drink or swim in. It is a living, breathing carrier of consciousness; a cosmic fluid that records, stores, and bridges thoughts across the entire universe. Near the shore of Lake Superior lies an ancient, hidden gateway known as the Watering Hole. It connects our wild, loving Earth to the manicured, dimension-folded world of Lemuria and the vast metropolis of the deep cosmos.
When Melanie and Nakwe’s paths collide, they don’t just spark a romance, they trigger a connection that taps directly into this planet-altering reservoir of raw, universal energy. To share a mind telepathically is one thing. But to share a consciousness through the very fabric of the cosmos? That changes everything.
Tashia Hart is a writer and artist from the Red Lake Nation. Her literary works include Native Love Jams; The Good Berry Cookbook: Harvesting and Cooking Wild Rice and Other Wild Foods, Gidjie and the Wolves, and Girl Unreserved. Her short works include recipes, essays, poetry, and short stories. Tashia lives in Duluth with her husband and her son.
12:30-2:00 PM Kristina Shuey: The Ash Beneath the Snow (Local, Historical Fiction)
Set against the nor’easter that devastated the Great Lakes shipping industry and sparked the creation of the north shore’s Split Rock Lighthouse, The Ash Beneath the Snow continues Anna and Karl’s story from The Day the World Burned.
Eleven years after the Great Hinckley Fire, Anna Andersson has built a quiet life rooted in teaching and routine. Karl Sundvquist works in northern Minnesota lumber camps. A clerical error reunites them, placing them in a remote Pine County camp. Conflicts test their trust, resilience, and a bond that never fully faded. Then the Mataafa Storm hammers Lake Superior, forcing Anna and Karl into a fight for survival.
Kristina Shuey is a 2012 graduate of the University of Minnesota Duluth. She resides in Pine County with her husband and four children. Kristina’s debut novel The Day the World Burned earned honorable mention at the Northeastern Minnesota Book Awards. The Ash Beneath the Snow is a sequel to her first book.
