Slow Pulp have always embraced reinvention. Singer and guitarist Emily Massey joined childhood friends Henry Stoehr (guitar), Alex Leeds (bass), and Teddy Mathews (drums) in Madison, Wisconsin, forming a band shaped by ’90s alt-rock and 2000s indie. After relocating to Chicago in 2018, they entered a new chapter both personally and creatively.
Early momentum was met with unexpected challenges. Living and touring together tested the band, while Massey faced illness and family hardships that informed the making of their acclaimed debut, Moveys. During the creation of Yard, isolation unexpectedly became a creative breakthrough, resulting in a record that expanded their sound and established Slow Pulp as one of indie rock’s most compelling bands.
With their third album, Melodie, the band had nothing to prove. Instead, they looked inward, revisiting old friendships, creative habits, and shared history. The result is a record balancing power-pop energy, intimate acoustic moments, and emotional depth.
Returning to the collaborative songwriting that first united Massey and Stoehr became central to the album. Tracks like “Better Man” highlight Stoehr’s writing through Massey’s voice, while songs such as “Entertainer” blend both perspectives so seamlessly that authorship becomes secondary to emotion.
Melodie moves effortlessly between folk, dream pop, ballads, and driving guitar anthems. Songs like “Red Car” pair infectious melodies with underlying uncertainty, while producer Elliot Kozel helped refine the band’s arrangements without sacrificing their identity. Sharing production responsibilities marked another important step in Slow Pulp’s evolution.
Working with Kozel also encouraged greater trust within the band. His experience complemented their instincts, allowing them to expand their sound while remaining connected to their Wisconsin roots and longtime creative partnership.
Alongside its brighter moments, Melodie embraces vulnerability. “Not for Nothing” explores heartbreak and emotional surrender, while the closing track, “Slip Away,” captures isolation with devastating simplicity, reflecting on distance, memory, and self-acceptance.
For Slow Pulp, Melodie represents both a return and a transformation. By reconnecting with their past, they created songs that not only document emotion but deepen their understanding of it. Like every chapter before, the album reflects resilience, growth, and the enduring bond that continues to define the band.
