Okay people, YOU asked, WE delivered!We are thrilled to announce the very first (that I know of 😉) So-Cal Slow Balboa Workshop with Jacob Wigger and Olivia Hales! 🤩🩵
The Slow Balboa that we know and see today is typically some combination of Dean Raftery’s Slow Balboa, Ray Cunningham’s version of Laminu, Balboa movements done slow, and modern movements that have been added by today’s dancers. As some additional vintage Slow Bal dance clips are being discovered (shout out to Nick Williams!), we are slowly starting to see consistent patterns that cross over from clip to clip, and among the original dancers..giving us a slightly more complete picture of what was being done by the original dancers.
For this workshop, we will have a “from the ground up” approach. The main focus will be on the original movements from Dean and Ray as well as some movements based on these ways of moving. We will be making an effort to give due respect and honor to this beautiful dance and the people responsible for creating it by deep diving into the what and how. (And of course we might throw in a little flare of our own as well! 🥰 )
This workshop will be Beginner-Higher Intermediate level (with maybe an “Advanced” taster in there at the end 😉). We ask that everyone have some knowledge and experience with Pure Balboa before signing up. The majority of the time will be spent in closed position so some knowledge of how to connect this way is valuable.
