About this Event
Slovakia’s premiere Yiddish klezmer group, the Pressburger Klezmer Band, is joined by NY’s rocking downtown polka ensemble, The Old Bohemians aka Polka Loca. The bands will play separately and then come together to create ecstatic concert and dance music celebrating multiple heritages.
The Preßburger Klezmer Band is a unique musical body which has attracted quite a number of fans since it was established in 1995. It is the first Slovak band to take its inspiration from klezmer. The band serves up an energetic musical cocktail: a charming mix of Jewish, Balkan and Oriental music, complemented by Slovak and Gipsy folk elements – all combined with a unique essence of contemporary styles, including jazz, rock, reggae and Latino. The Preßburger Klezmer Band is a well-established part of the European World music scene.
The Old Bohemians aka Polka Loca was created by the klezmer legend, trumpeter Sir Frank London of the Grammy Award-winning Klezmatics. The concert features accordion/new music master Shoko Nagai and a group of New York’s most adventurous musicians.
Supported by public funds from Slovak Arts Council, Consulate General of the Slovak Republic, New York State Council on the Arts, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, National Endowment for the Arts, and NY City Council. Additional support: Bohemian Benevolent and Literary Association, Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Juraj George Braun and Dr. Helen Salus. Presented by GOH Productions, a non profit arts organization.
