cistern
Former members of Loam, Painted Fruit and N0V3L make up this fairly new indie rock group from Squamish. Debut album Head Full of Questions from January is a tight collection of nine songs that traverse jaunty trots and tightly coiled post-punk alike. They describe it as “kinda techy, but also vibey,” and honestly, that’s pretty spot on.
Nutrients
Jangle-pop act Nutrients is simply overflowing with charm. The band’s gentle tunes recall soft rock and new wave of the ‘80s but with a contemporary style that places them alongside acts like Homeshake. A new album is due soon, but don’t wait for that. Get started with 2022’s Different Bridges, a collection of pop gems full of polyrhythm and sax.
Cassia Hardy
While her band Wares may be on hiatus, Edmonton’s guitar maestro Cassia Hardy is still making power pop-inspired rock and lyrically driven singer-songwriter tunes. The former Polaris Prize longlister hasn’t released much music yet, but there’s no doubt she’ll deliver once again at this year’s Sled Island.
Pancake
With a sound described as “post-pop diet-punk crunk-style surf-wave,” Pancake is much a tribute to friendship as a genre-bending blast of musical spectacle. With virtuoso musicianship backing sunny melodies and a raucous live show, this elusive Calgary classic hits the spot like Sunday brunch after a night of partying.
