Introspective lyrics, earworm melodies, and bite-sized grunge-pop anthems; it’s the Buddie formula, and it’s quite effective. Daniel Forrest started Buddie in 2018 as an outlet for catchy pop songs about topics like class struggle and environmental justice. Buddie’s lineup includes Lindsay Partin on bass, Natalie Glubb on drums, and Patrick Farrugia backing up on guitar.
Cistern
Raw, scrappy and intuitive, Cistern is just a group of friends forging awe and anguish into song. Utilizing multiple songwriters, the group casts a wide net for inspiration, including ‘00s indie rock, ‘90s slowcore and ‘80s post-punk, resulting in songs with unconventional structures and drastic dynamic changes.
Salt Horse
The ‘90s are back - but just the parts you don't remember. Made up of alums from long-forgotten Calgary bands (Fire Engine Red, Placebo, Massive Ferguson, the Parkades), Salt Horse play angular indie rock that melds power pop with new wave; it’ll drag you up the stairs to the Night Gallery one more time.
