Juana Molina
Experimental pop icon Juana Molina would make an equally good part of RuPaul’s Drag Race as she would at the Kennedy Centre Honors. A coup-fleeing comedian before exploding into music, Molina made impressions on David Byrne and created a folktronica sound parallel to — but distinct from — what was happening in the UK in the ‘90s and 2000s.
Her vocals are tactile and intimate, whether or not you speak Spanish. Molina’s music feels beamed directly into your ears, just for you. Her command of synthetic and acoustic textures in tandem are warm, fresh, playful and entirely her own. That might be why Rolling Stone compared her to both Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys and Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine. They, like Molina, are two artists who created entire genres by resisting the confines of their day. Her nine studio releases chart the course of an unpredictable visionary, from four Domino discs from the ‘90s to 2019 EP ForFun and her first-ever live record, ANRMAL - Live in Mexico, released in 2020.
She has also lent her vocals to past Sled Island guest curator Deerhoof, as well as German impresarios The Notwist, two artists with whom she has nothing in common but tremendous vision. Sometimes, if you have enough talent and singularity, things just make sense.

Tess Roby
Formerly signed to cult label Italians Do It Better, electronic singer-songwriter Tess Roby struck out on her own by releasing most recent album Ideas of Space on her own label SSURROUNDSS. Throughout her music, her fluttering vocals effortlessly soar above synth and drum programming that ranges from ambient to danceable.

aniqa dear
What if Kate Bush and Laurie Anderson had a baby? The kid would sound like — but only be half as talented as — aniqa dear. Her endearing art-pop is disarmingly off-kilter, wholly original and instantly memorable. Her Pakistani/Indian, Arab and queer background shine through in the new sonic landscape she creates.

mineo kawasaki
Drummer and composer mineo kawasaki builds electronic soundscapes with both live drums and a MIDI controller. The solo project employs vinyl sampling infused with elements of house, techno and experimental music to carve tracks that work well both on the headphones and the dance floor.

Kee Avil
With a mixture of folk-pop, glitchy minimal and avante-garde electroacoustic, Kee Avil combines guitar, vocal and electronic elements to forge avant-pop compositions. Her non-linear, innovative tracks have captured the attention of genre-bending label Constellation Records, who released her JUNO-nominated debut album Crease in 2022. Join the sonic fantasyland as Avil blazes a path forward.

Phantom Orchard
Kira Sawatzky crafts glitchy minimalist pop tunes under the moniker Phantom Orchid. Released last year, her debut EP Pure Mother explores identity after motherhood through the lens of sparse synth, hypnotic drum machine parts and catchy vocal melodies. Her gentle pop ruminations are aimed straight for the heart, the mind and the soul.

Victrix
Multi-instrumentalist Mickey Jane takes chamber melodies straight to the stage with her dreamy sonic project Victrix. An artful foundation of drum machines and synthy noise supports her indie pop soul on latest EP I Saw Me, produced by Chris Dadge. It’s bedroom pop for the dreamers and the darkly inclined.
