Hey there, writers and poetry lovers! Important note: our regularly scheduled July show will be pushed to July 13th. We know the holidays can be hectic, and we want you to be able to make new stories with the people you care about most. That said, Slam Richmond is cranking up the heat this summer with some fabulous spoken word poetry workshops, hosted by the one and only Regie Cabico! Regie Cabico is the first Asian American and queer poet to win top prizes in 3 National Poetry Slams and a Nuyorican Poets Cafe Grand Slam Champion. Mr. Cabico is the author of A Rabbit In Search of a Rolex (Day IEight, 2023). He appeared on TEDx Talk, HBO's Def Poetry & NPR's Snap Judgement. He is the editor of 4 anthologies including Flicker & Spark: An Anthology of Poetry and Spoken Word (Low Brow, 2013). This is your chance to learn from the best and bring your poetic prowess to life, so join us for this amazing experience in both July and August!
The workshops in July and August will start at 5 PM, and our open mic will be at its regular time, 8:30 PM. These special events we create here at Artspace are free, but donations are greatly appreciated and help us create more moments like these. So bring your love of writing and your passion, we look forward to seeing you! For more information on current and future events, please check out our profile or find our socials at linktree.com/slamrva.
July Workshop:
Up Against the Wall Moments: A Writing and Performance Spoken Word Poetry Workshop led by Regie Cabico
We will use improvisation to pull out our moments of drama and triumph in writing our biographical poems. We will look at the works of Shanturo Tanikawa, and Yesika Delgado to channel our resilient selves. We can share our stories in a nurturing space. We will also examine elements of performance vocal phrasing, pausing, and listening to find the difference between performing a poem and reading a poem
At Slam Richmond, we value your well-being. We encourage all performers to prioritize their mental health and create a safe space for creativity to flourish. We are all about healthy competition and building lasting friendships. Best of all, the entire weekend event is free! So join us for a lively night of poetry and performance art!
This workshop is made possible by The Virginia Commission for the Arts, Artspace, and Slam Richmond.
