Pledge to make a difference this MLK Day- save the date.SLAD will be hosting a Blessings in a Backpack packing party on Monday, January 20th, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Location is TBD, but it will be local to South Lyon. We will be packing food bags that will be distributed to local school-aged kids and their families. This is a family-friendly event, all are welcome!
We are also asking for food donations to pack in the bags:
- Cans of ravioli and/or soup
- Canned or bagged chicken, or chicken and cracker kits
- Canned fruit or veggies - can be full cans or individual cups - please no foil lidded applesauce - (squeezable is ok!), the foil lidded packages tend to get punctured and create messes.
- Individual cereal pouches/boxes/packages
- Instant Oatmeal (boxes of packets, individual cups, etc)
- Granola/protein/fruit and grain bars
- Individually wrapped snacks: crackers, pretzels, cheese and crackers, peanut butter crackers, popcorn, etc - anything individually wrapped.
- Ramen, Mac and Cheese
There are 3 ways to donate:
1. Bring your food items to the SLAD monthly meeting on December 17th.
2. Porch dropoff at the Purvis house (58545 Pontiac Trail, New Hudson) or the Aschers’ house (6804 Harvest Ct, South Lyon)
3. Donate money and we will shop for you! https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/ESW22B666PX3E
Let’s turn inauguration day into something positive!

About the MLK Day of Service:
This year, the nation celebrates the 30th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service, where Americans volunteer to honor Dr. King's legacy. Through service and volunteerism, we have the power to bring people together, help others, and create the Beloved Community of Dr. King’s dreams.
For 30 years, the MLK Day of Service has grown, and its impact has increased as more Americans embrace the idea that citizenship involves taking an active role in improving the communities where we live, work, and play. Every year, we show the nation that joining together in service can transform the lives of those who serve and the lives of others. Service to others gives communities across the nation a way to come together and reveal our common humanity.
Join us this MLK Day to build a Beloved Community through unity, service, and transformation. Volunteer to create lasting change that will benefit our communities for years.
