SKYROCKET!
In a music city obsessed with originality, Skyrocket is perhaps the most creative and singular cover band ever to emerge from Austin, Texas (or anywhere). An organic mash-up of successful musicians, visual artists, and actors, Skyrocket is an irresistible tribute to the very best of the Vinyl Era.
Skyrocket’s witty and fearless attitude all started when a group of friends (veterans from Austin’s indie-rock, alternative, and songwriter scenes) discovered their common craze for the days of anthem-hits, and one-hit wonders. From there, Skyrocket spread its wings to include all the AM/FM singles they loved growing up. With each band member proficient at many instruments, they boldly tackled material that other bands wouldn’t…note for note…to frightening levels of accuracy.
The members of Skyrocket bring years of touring, recording and event programming experience to the stage. Yet they approach all performances with an uncontrived spirit of energetic fun. The fans embrace Skyrocket with the same fervor as they do their favorite original artists.
Here’s a snapshot of some band members and a few fun facts:
· Benjamin Hotchkiss – Frontman, Vocals, Guitar, Drums, Keyboards and Bass
Benjamin is Skyrocket’s Master of Ceremonies and front man, a fiercely talented and trained character actor, voice talent and fearlessly physical comedian. Benjamin honed his chops fronting the Duckhills, who frequently toured with Poi Dog Pondering. Later on he met Kyle, and they formed The Real Heroes along with Paul English, releasing several bombastic albums. They continue to reunite regularly for their loving fans.
· Darin Murphy – Drums, Guitar and Vocals
As Skyrocket’s musical director, drummer Darin draws on the skills from his college days as a music-programming phenom, training club DJs nationwide for the nightclub company McFadden Ventures. Multitalented Darin spent part of 2019 on tour with the Beatles White-Album tribute show “It was 50 Years Ago Today,” starring Todd Rundgren, Christopher Cross, Joey Molland and Mickey Dolenz. Expert knowledge of the Beatles also earned him his Broadway acting debut, with the cast of “Lennon.” As a drummer he has performed with, among others, Bob Schneider, Cotton Mather, the BoDeans, and Elijah Ford.
· Johnny Goudie – Keyboards, Guitars, and Vocals
Johnny Goudie knows everybody. In 2020, he celebrated his 1,000th episode of “How Did I Get Here?”, an entertainment podcast that takes the form of a casual living room conversation, while packing the punch of a formal interview. When Skyrocket approaches a new promoter, in just about any territory the world over, once that promoter finds out Johnny Goudie is in the band, stories start pouring out (in multiple languages) and the band gets hired, sight unseen. Johnny has also made records with Lars Ullrich (Metallica), and played frequently with Kathy Valentine (the GoGo’s/Bluebonnets), Ian Moore, and Alpha Rev.
· Paul English – Lead Guitar, Vocals and Bass
Paul is a voracious reader and bears a preternatural resemblance to Eric Clapton. He just so happens to play ferocious lead guitar, too, with the same amount of passion and precision, which has worked out very well for Skyrocket. Paul is also the electronics wizard in the band, who has launched his own line of custom guitar pedals.
· Cory Glaeser – Bass guitar, Keyboards, Vocals and Lead Guitar
“I come from the land of ice and snow, from the midnight sun where the cold beer flows… Wisconsin.” But don’t let that playful self-descriptor fool you. Cory is a virtuoso on keyboards, lead guitar… even though he actually plays bass in the band. Good thing he has a music degree from UW Madison, or nobody would take his Teen-Magazine boyish look seriously at all. Cory is also renowned for being a touring member of the hit-parade Austin band Fastball. As a founding member of the Austin band Sheboygan, Cory pays tribute to his Wisconsin hometown. His hobbies include backyard “brat frys” and smuggling cheddar home in his backpack.
· Trish Murphy – Vocals, Guitar, Keyboards, Bass
Trish has numerous albums under her belt, as a prominent singer-songwriter in the Austin scene. She toured for two summers on the famed Lilith Fair festival and has performed throughout the US and Europe. She is the only female member of Skyrocket, and her striking girl power goes toe to toe with the guys (including her brother Darin). Trish has worked with many local songwriting friends, including Kelly Willis, Hayes Carll, Joe Ely, David Grissom, Robert Earl Keen, Pat Green, Slaid Cleaves, Sara Hickman, and Robyn Ludwick. She recently worked on a recording project for Nancy Wilson of Heart, one of her childhood idols. She can check TV off her bucket list, too, after a singing role on the HBO drama “The Leftovers.”
· Chris Gebhard – Guitar, Keyboards, Vocals, Bass
You’d never guess that this graduate of MI Hollywood, with a BFA in jazz guitar studies from UW-Milwaukee, puts the “rock” in Skyrocket. Chris is known around Austin under his own name, too, with his jazz trio, solo acoustic show, and original rock band. He’s also a beloved sideman with many Austin artists: Fastball, Ian Moore, Nicole Atkins, Bruce Robison, Kelly Willis, Cotton Mather, Rebecca Loebe, Suzanna Choffel, Future Clouds and Radar, Wrenfro with Tony Scalzo and Kevin McKinney. He enjoys dark beers, awkward gazes, and dusty sunsets.General Admission tickets go up to $35 day of show and will include additional fees when purchased at the door.
(all minors must pay additional $5 per ticket at the door)
