Nothing speaks to the moment quite like music does. No matter how chaotic, confusing, and crazy the world may seem, the right song will make sense of it.
Skillet tap into the sound of surviving any adversity, dusting yourself off, and getting back up again for another round. Heavy guitars kick with the inspiration to keep going, while stadium-size hooks double as a reminder to never give up no matter what. The quartet-John Cooper [lead vocals, bass], Korey Cooper [guitar, keys, production], Jen Ledger [drums, vocals], and Seth Morrison [lead guitar]-have quietly, yet indisputably become one of the biggest global hard rock bands of the 21st century with total album sales just shy of 22 million, an average of 12 million monthly Spotify listeners, and dozens of massive placements across sports, film, and television.
However, Skillet decided to get heavier and punch harder on their 2026 single "Scream."
"This is special to me," observes John. "It reignites what Skillet was always meant to be-which is music that helps lift people out of dark times. I wrote these songs because I needed to be lifted out of my darkness."
This undertaking brought the frontman full circle. Skillet had not made a song in his hometown of Memphis since 2003's Collide. Over two decades later, he found himself recording in a studio barely seven minutes from his childhood home. Enmeshed in personal trials and tribulations, the experience reminded him of what music means to him.
"When I was 12-to-15-years-old, my mom was sick with cancer," he says. "I leaned on music to get through it. After she died, the subsequent years were a time when I felt betrayed and abandoned. It was tough, but it shaped me into who I am. It's why I write about mental health and spirituality. Over the last few years, I was going through similar betrayals and abandonment. I felt the same anger, depression, and rage. I was crying out to God for help in a way that I hadn't since I was a teenager. So, I don't think it's a coincidence we went back to Memphis and worked with a producer who knew the band before we'd made our first record. Life has taken some great turns, but it's also taken some painful turns. Now we're here, and we still have more of a story to tell. The music kept getting heavier, and I said, 'We've got to go all-in'."
They certainly did with their single "Scream." Clean electric guitar slips into the undertow of crushing distortion. John makes a confession on the catchy and cathartic chorus, "I wanna scream. I wanna break something beautiful." Ominous keys ring out, the beat snaps, and he wonders, "Will I ever be enough?" Finally, a palm-muted bridge uncorks one last burst of emotion punctuated by glitchy electronics.
"I don't think I'm the only one who's noticing the volatility of the world and how social media is a cesspool where people are constantly yelling at each other," he sighs. "It's not helping anyone's mental health. In this landscape, it's easy to feel like nothing matters. 'Scream' is about wanting your life to matter when things only seem to get worse. Nevertheless, you're facing the nihilistic rage head-on and crying out for help."
The music of Skillet continues to resonate in the hearts of fans worldwide, perhaps louder than ever in 2026. Among a catalog highlighted by chart-topping albums and hits, the 6x-Platinum "Monster" has eclipsed 5 billion global streams, claimed a place in Spotify's "Billions Club," and resounded as "one of the most-streamed rock songs of all time." During 2025, their first-ever Christmas release "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" made a viral impact and captured #1 on five Billboard charts. The band's 2026 European tour brought them in front of their biggest international crowds yet-not only selling out shows across the continent, but breaking ticket sales records at venues like Zénith Paris. Awarded multiplatinum, platinum, or gold RIAA certifications for 12 singles and four full-length albums, the group have notably garnered two GRAMMY® Award nominations, earned a Billboard Music Award, and impressively delivered three Top 5 debuts on the Billboard 200. Their enduring impact has been chronicled by USA Today and The New York Times, to name a few. They have consistently landed syncs from WWE, Marvel, ESPN, and NFL. They've played to millions in virtually every livable corner of the globe. Widening the scope of this vision, Skillet launched the graphic novel series EDEN with Z2.
Ultimately, Skillet's music is there if you need it.
"For me, rock music was always so I could face life the next day without feeling so alone," John leaves off. "This single may be a little more meaningful because we haven't dealt with such dark issues in a long time. I want Skillet's music to be a reminder you can make it." - Rick Florino, May 2026
