Homeschool Craft and Trades Program
28+12 Session School-Year • Ages 11–17
Thursdays • 10 AM to 1 PM • September 3, 2026 to April 8, 2027
This is our hands-on school year (1.0 CU) where teens learn blacksmithing, welding, and woodworking through real tools, real projects, in a safety-focused workshop environment. Students explore the history and science of each craft while building confidence, creativity, and practical skill. No prior experience required.
🔨 Introduction to Blacksmithing (5 Sessions)
Students learn tapering, scrolling, twisting, punching, and basic metallurgy while completing three forged projects. Open studio time supports fitting, sanding, and finishing the final piece.
⚒️ Intermediate Blacksmithing (5 Sessions)
Students refine hammer technique, learn traditional joinery, and use modern forging equipment. The module concludes with a multi-component forged project requiring accuracy and planning.
🔧 Introduction to Welding (5 Sessions)
Students learn welding-shop safety, basic metallurgy, and hands-on use of angle grinders, oxy acetylene torches, plasma cutters, belt grinders, and other essential tools. Several small welded projects reinforce cutting, fitting, and fabrication skills.
🔩 Intermediate Welding (5 Sessions)
Students design and fabricate a multi-component welded project, such as a small furniture piece or wine bottle holder. Instruction focuses on cleaner welds, better fit-up, precise cutting, and proper sequencing.
🪚 Foundations of Woodworking (4 Sessions)
Students learn fundamental woodworking skills while creating a project. Learning safe tool use, accurate layout, cutting and drilling, structural and dovetail joinery, glue-ups, sanding, shaping, and finishing.
📘⚒️ Theory and Touchstone (4 Sessions)
One classroom session covers material science, design fundamentals, blueprint overview, project planning, and design drawing.
Three sessions are dedicated to creating the final touchstone project.
12 open studio sessions support sanding, finishing, and completing all semester work. (Tuesdays or Thursdays 6 PM - 9 PM)
